Invasive:  Black Swallow-wort

Picture

This plant escaped from a garden in Essex, MA in 1854 spread through Massachusetts. This plant is particularly problematic because the monarch butterfly will cue into the black swallow-work to lay eggs, but the larvae do not survive.

Native:  Common Milkweed

This is the common milkweed. We have planted a few plants in the "meadow" area but if you find more plants feel free to add them to our collection.

Invasive:  Garlic Mustard

Picture
Garlic Mustard is a plant that was recorded first in the North America in 1868 in New York it has spread and taken over parts of the woods at Johnson School. This plant is an invasive plant and has pushed out the "toothworts" that are the primary food of the native West Virginia white butterfly. We are trying to remove this plant from Johnson School but the seeds can last for 5 years so we would love some help. It can be pulled out by the roots very easily so it is great job for kids. Does anyone have access to some toothwort plants that we can put in the woods to return this plant to its natural environment?
